C021857 U.S. WWI WEB POUCH.

BACKGROUND: Webbing was a new form of material made from pre shrunk, pre dyed, water proofed, cotton. Designed by a United States Army officer, Captain Mills, it was much tougher than the leather used for all previous military equipment and did not suffer from the unfortunate problem of shrinkage in wet conditions.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A canvas pouch, about 5 1/4" by 8", with a fold over flap closure with two lift-the-dot fasteners. Sewn to the reverse is a 7 1/2" by 2" web strap that extends above the pouch and ends in a blackened brass belt hook. At each of the corners on the reverse are blackened brass grommets. Stamped in black to the front of the flap is "U.S.’ while stamped to the pouch under the flap is "N.B. Co. 10-18". This pouch possibly held medical supplies. The pouch has moderate to heavy usage stains, verdigris on the brass snaps and some minor wear but is still in good condition.
