C020958 FIVE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH RANK PIPS.

BACKGROUND: The rank insignia used by officers in the British and Commonwealth forces during the second world war consisted of four pieces of insignia used in combinations to create the rank designations. These were the crown, star or pip, a crossed saber and baton and crossed batons with gilt and gilt enamel used on best dress, brass being used on service dress and cloth used on battle dress. During the early years of the war and a few years before khaki rank insignia were sewn onto colored backing but later in the war they were embroidered directly on the colored backing. The colored backing represented the unit and was the same color as regimental shoulder flashes.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Five stamped brass rank pips, three about 7/8" square and two about 3/4" square. The design on the pips are three crowns formed in an inverted triangle with the motto inscribed around them "Tria Juncta In Uno" (Three Joined In One) surrounded by a wreath and represent the union of the Crowns of England, Ireland and Scotland. One of the larger pips is plain brass while the other four are gilt with green enamel in the wreath and red enamel around the motto. To the reverse of the pips are double prong retaining loops and two of the pips have brass cotter pins. The brass pip is in unused condition, the two large gilt pips have most of the enamel intact with light to moderate wear to the gilt while the smaller pips are in better condition with only some minor wear to the highlights.
