C020457 BRITISH LEATHER COMBAT JERKIN.
BACKGROUND:
The leather "Jerkin" was originally introduced in the British army during the first winter of WWI, (1914/15), and immediately became popular with the troops. The sleeveless design allowed for easy mobility while still protecting the wearer from the elements. The Jerkin was adopted by all the British Dominions, (Canada, Australia, etc.), and its usage continued through-out WWII.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A multi-panel, dark brown leather construction, three quarter length, sleeveless, collarless, jerkin with a vertical four button front closure. The interior of the jerkin is fully lined in very dark blue melton wool. The interior lining has a white oilcloth label machine stitched in place. The label has black printed script that includes "Jerkins - Leather", "Size 2", "Height 5' 7" to 5' 10"", "Breast 37" to 43"", "(Over Jacket)" "M. Belmont & Co. Ltd." with the date "1943" and a "broad arrow". The buttons are the large molded brown bakelite type and appear to have their original stitching. The jerkins were cut large enough to fit over the standard battledress uniform and this example is roughly size 40" chest. The jerkin is in overall very good condition with some minor chaff wear to the bottom edges and the sides.
