A hatchet consisting of a steel head and a wooden handle. The wedge shaped head, with a teardrop shaped hole, is about 2" high by 1" thick at the butt, flaring out to 3" and coming to a curved point at the blade. Stamped to one side of the butt is "U.S.". The slightly curved handle is 16" long with 2 3/8" of one end inserted through the hole in the head and held in place by spreading wood wedge and at least 3 nails. The head has a fair amount of surface oxidization and pitting while the handle is in good shape with some small chips and moderate to heavy age and soil darkening.
