C019357 CANADIAN ISSUE CASED 6 X 30 POWER BINOCULARS. A pair of brass body binoculars, standing approximately 4 1/8" tall, with their original neck strap and brown leather case. The binoculars have a black finish, with black leatherette covering the sides of the main body of both lenses. Edge wear may be seen to the top and bottom of the body, the double bridge that connects the two lenses, and the larger lenses. Its eye sockets are of black bakelite. A cross-hatched focusing band, marked with a "0", a "+" and "-" and the numbers "5" to either side (with increments continuing completely around the band), are to each eyepiece. The optics are quite cloudy. The adjustable disk to the base of the column that connects the bridges work perfectly, tightening them into position but the focus adjustments are seized in place. Gradations from 56 to 74, in increments of two, are to the top of this column. To the left side of the top of the body is inscribed a "C-broad arrow", along with the embossed "Military Stereo" and the power "6 x 30" while embossed to the right side is "Bausch & Lomb Optical Co", "Rochester. N.Y. U.S.A.". Either end of its approximately 3/8" x 31" brown leather neck strap is fed through the loops to either underside of the body of the binoculars, where they fold back upon themselves and are joined by a riveted brass stud and eyelet along with being reinforced by a winding of waxed thread. Hand written to the underside of the strap is "LT W. J. Burton", 25th Batt Canadians". The strap exhibits moderate chafe wear but is otherwise still supple. The 6 3/4" x 5 1/8" x 2 3/4", slightly curved, brown leather case features a top fold-over flap fixed to the rear by a riveted leather hinge, such that it opens inwards when the case is attached to a belt. Stamped to the inside of the flap is the manufactures logo, two concentric circles with the text between them "Bausch & Lomb Optical Co Rochester. N.Y." and to the center a triangle cut in three with " B-L", "S", and "2" in the three sections. The hinge is riveted to the body of the case towards the top and the bottom to form a large belt loop. Hand written to the bottom of the loop is "Leut W. J. Burton" and "Canadians 28 Batt". The case is in good condition with usage scuffs and soiling with one side of the lid starting to separate. The carrying strap goes down one side, under the bottom and up the other side of the case and is attached by two riveted leather loops on either side. The strap has unfortunately broken but the pieces with the original adjustment holes and brass buckle are still with the case. To the front of the case is a brass stud which was for the cloth covered spring closure for the lid but all that remains of the closure are the springs with some tatters of cloth. A nice matching named set that is in good condition for its age. Of Note: The 28th (North-west) Infantry Battalion was part of the CEF (Canadian Expeditionary Force) formed at Winnipeg, Man on the 11 of January, 1914. The battalion was deployed overseas to Britain as part of the "Second Contingent" in June of 1915.
