C019257 DUTCH POST-WAR, SPECIAL COMMANDO FORCE INDONESIA BERET.
BACKGROUND:
The Korps Speciale Troepen (KST) traces its roots back to when 25 out of 48 Dutch males passed a commando training course in Achnacarry, Scotland. They became the members of the new No.2 troop that was part of the No.10 Inter-allied Commando unit. After German and Japanese capitulation both units were disbanded and members of the No.2 troop were attached to the new 100 man Depot Speciale Troepen (Depot Special Forces) and sent to restore order in the Dutch East Indies where they were renamed Korps Speciale Troepen under command of Raymond Westerling. The unit was disbanded in 1950 and its members went on to become part of the newly formed Korps Commandotroepen.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A single piece green-colored wool beret, the lower part which is bound in blackened leather through which runs a tape that is used to adjust the size. The interior is lined with black rayon. On the front, above the left eye when worn, is a bronze cap badge, consisting of a pair of outstretched wings with a parachute and hand with sword within a laurel wreath to the center. The badge is attached to the beret by two screw back devices toward the tips of each wing. Under the cap badge are two, stitch reinforced, holes which would indicate that there may have been a different cap badge on the beret at one time. The beret is in good condition with the expected nap wear while the leather binding is still supple with no discernable wear while the badge has an overall age patina and some minor spots of verdigris forming on the reverse. A nice example of a rare piece of history.
