C019057 ROYAL DUTCH MARINES LOYAL SERVICE MEDAL.
BACKGROUND:
The medal for long and faithful service was instituted on the 5th of January, 1845, by King Willem II to reward professional sailors in the Royal Dutch Navy. The bronze medal was awarded for 12 years of service at home or for 6 years in the colonies.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A circular bronze medallion, about 1 7/16" in diameter, with a crowned mantle embossed with the letter "W", for King Willem II, while to the reverse is a crowned national coat of arms superimposed on crossed anchors. Inscribed around the edge is "Voor Trouwe Dienst." (For faithful service) and "Koninklijke Marine." (Royal Navy. To the top of the medal is a ball with a ribbon ring through which a piece of orange ribbon, 1 7/16" wide is threaded. The ribbon has faded slightly on one side and the medal has an overall dark age patina with some wearing to the highlights and a few dents to the edge but is still in good condition considering its age.
