C018957 ROYAL DUTCH ARMY 1914-1918 MOBILIZATION CROSS & MINIATURE. BACKGROUND: With the First World War raging all around them, the Netherlands had a hard time maintaining their neutrality. In order to do this they fielded an army of up to 450,000 men in order to patrol their borders and capture German or Allied soldiers who ignored their neutrality. The Mobilization Cross 1914-1918 was officially recognized by Army Order of 26 November 1924, and awarded to those who had worn an official Dutch uniform between 4 August 1914 and 11 November 1918 and served under military supervision.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A bronze cross, about 1 3/16" by 1 3/16", to which the obverse has been embossed "1914" and "1918" to the vertical arms and "Augustus" and "November" to the horizontal arms. Between the arms are bundles of arrows that symbolize the power of unity. To the reverse is embossed "Mobilisatie", "Vrede", "Eer" (Mobilization, Peace, Honor) along with a makers mark, a shield with two stars and a "B" inside, to the bottom. To the top is a ball with a ribbon ring through which a piece of ribbon, 1 1/4" wide, with alternating blue, white and red vertical stripes is threaded. The miniature cross is the same except the dimensions of the cross are about 5/8" by 5/8" and the ribbon is 7/16" wide with a safety pin and the makers mark has no shield. Both are in very good condition with some age darkening to the recesses and some minor pitting to the lower reverse arm of the miniature cross.
