C018257 ROYAL DUTCH ARMY AIR FORCE PILOT OBSERVER BADGE.

BACKGROUND: Dutch military air qualification badges were originally gold embroidered cloth but in 1940 a series of metal qualification badges were struck. When the Netherlands was invaded by Germany on May 10 of 1940, their Air Force was no match for the Luftwaffe and after five days the Dutch surrendered. The remaining Dutch airmen fled to England and became an integral part of the British Coastal Command using their experience keeping the convoy routes open. New badges were struck in England and usually bore the makers mark "Toye" or "Toye London" and sometimes "silver".

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A gilt wash alloy badge , about 3 3/8" wide by 1 3/4" high, of a eagle in flight, with head to the left, superimposed on an orange (in honor of the House of Orange), sun ray streaked, enamel disk, below which is a dark blue enamel disk, surrounded by a gilt wash laurel wreath, with a gilt wash "W" to its center. To the reverse are two prongs and a brass cotter pin. The badge is in very good condition with the enamel intact and a light overall age patina and a discoloration, possibly a glue, to the center reverse.
