BACKGROUND: The rank of Commodore is used by some navies for officers who have a rank less than Admiral but greater than Captain. The Koninklijke Marine (Royal Netherlands Navy) has used the rank of Commandeur (Commodore) from the late 1500's for temporary positions until making it a permanent rank in 1955.
