C017556 U.S. SIXTY-THIRD DIVISION SLEEVE BADGE.

BACKGROUND: Created in 1943 the 63rd Infantry Division landed in southern France, six months after D-Day, in December 1944. It is said that the design came from an emotional pledge made by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, at the 1943 Casablanca Conference, that the "enemy would bleed and burn in expiation of their crimes against humanity."

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A machine embroidered tear drop shaped patch, about 3 3/8" by 2", consisting of a bloodied roman short sword, engulfed in flame, on an olive drab background. The badge appears to be used due to the remnants of attaching threads but is in very good condition with some minor nap wear to the outside edge.
