C017457 LATVIAN "TEJVIJA" NEWSPAPER.
BACKGROUND: The Latvian newspaper "Tevija" ("Fatherland") was published in Riga from July 1 1941, to 24 April 1945, and was used as a propaganda paper to fan the flames of anti-Semitism among the population. Franz Walter Stahlecker, commanding officer of Einsatzgruppe A, shut down the first Latvian newspaper in Riga, Briva zeme (Free Land), and imposed "Tevija" on them. The editors of "Tevija" were all hired and fired by the Germans.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The newspaper is about 19 1/4" x 13 3/16", consists of five pages and was published in Riga on, "21. Oktobri 1941.". The paper contains numerous assorted articles, four photos and one illustration along with numerous advertisements and death notices. The paper has yellowed and stiffened with age, has a couple of tiny holes in the fold and is starting to fray a little at the top edge but has no tears and is in very good condition.
