C015856 RUSSIAN MAP/DISPATCH CASE & CAPTURED GERMAN MAP.
BACKGROUND:
Map/dispatch cases were issued on a limited basis to specifically designated personnel such as unit commanders, messengers, and observers.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A brown, canvas lined, pebbled leather construction, map/dispatch case with steel fittings. The case is roughly 11" tall, 8 1/4" wide, and 1 1/2" thick, with folding, accordion, expanding side panels. The case has a fold over top closure flap with a machine stitched on, vertical closure strap with a riveted steel reinforced end and two riveted steel reinforced 1" wide horizontal slots, 1 1/4" apart, that mate with a 11/16" high steel loop riveted to the front of the pocket. Stamped to the inside of the flap is "30" and a rectangle that inside can be made out the "Hammer and Sickle" (USSR symbol), "41", and some indecipherable Cyrillic text. The front of the case features five, vertical, cylindrical pencil pockets to the left side with a German made pencil inserted in one of the pockets that is marked with a set of scales and the script "A.W.Faber", "Soldfaber", "4000, Germany", "COP", "B=2". To the center, riveted at the top, there is a vertical 2" leather strap with one hole, about halfway down a 1 3/8" long horizontal leather strip riveted at both ends to form a 11/16" loop and at the bottom, just above the steel fastening loop, is riveted a vertical, 1" long leather strap that ends in a single prong buckle. To the right side at the top is a pocket, shaped like a spade, that has a split leather flat with a snap enclosure, while to the bottom are two smaller pockets with top openings level with each other, one 1" by 1" and one 2 1/2" by 1". The reverse of the case has two 3/4" wide by 8" long leather strips that have been folded over on themselves and the bottom 2" attached by a single rivet and stitched to form 2" loops at the top through which "D" rings with spring clips have been inserted. The natural tan leather interior of the case has two compartments with a central, vertical, canvas separating panel. Inserted in the rear compartment is a 9" by 6 1/2" map/document holder that is made of two sheets of clear celluloid joined by a strip of leather stitched to three sides. The open top has reinforcing leather strips across the celluloid, the front being stitched on while the rear has three rivets that have unfortunately broken through the celluloid sheet. Included is a captured German map. The map, Roughly 27 1/2" by 21 1/2", is a single sided, color, printed, 1:50000 scale map of the Gnjilane region in southern Czechoslovakia just north of the Macedonian border. The top edge of the map has printed German script that includes, "Deutsche Heereskarte Nicht für die Offentlichkeit bestimmt!" (German Army map, Not intended for the public!). The map shows all of the regions topographical features including elevations, waterways, and forests. Also featured are villages, towns and cities, the road and rail networks and political borders. The right side of the map has a glossary of symbols utilized on the map in German script. The bottom edge of the map has additional German script which includes, "Herausgegeben vom OKH/Gen St d H, Chef des Kriegskarten- und Vermessungswesen 1943", (Published by the OKH/ General Staff of the Army, Chief of War Maps and Surveying 1943). The map shows light age yellowing a couple of small stains and some edge fraying and heavy fold creases. The case and map are in very good condition with some scuffing and scratching to the leather.
