C015656 ITALIAN WWI M16 ADRIAN HELMET.
BACKGROUND:
The French were the first to have a general issue, "modern ", steel helmet in WWI and developed the classic "Adrian" style helmet in early 1915 and exported them to a multitude of countries including Italy. The Italians developed their own helmet (M16) based on the French design, while it looked similar it was made out of two pieces of steel, the shell and visor pressed out of one with a separate comb, while the French M15 was a four piece construction, consisting of the crown, the front and back visors and the top comb.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A light weight, stamped, two piece sheet steel construction, "Adrian" helmet, consisting of the shell and the top comb. The helmet retains about 65% of its period olive green paint with a lighter green paint showing through and moderate surface spotting. It is possible that an emblem was stenciled to the front as there are vertical scratch marks that have cleaned an area down to the under lining paint and bare metal. The top of the helmet has a separate, fluted, ventilation comb running from the front center to the lip of the reverse neck guard visor and secured in place with three small dome headed rivets. The interior of the helmet retains its original age and usage darkened, seven finger, two piece, brown leather liner with its original leather tie string. The liner shows has all of its fingers intact but is quite dry and stiff and shows moderate soiling mostly around the headband area. The four corrugated metal spacers, used for ventilation, are intact. The helmet comes complete with its original two piece chocolate brown leather chinstrap with a single prong roller buckle on one end three adjustment holes to the other. The chinstrap is very dry and stiff and has a nick to the adjustment strap and light surface cracking to both. The helmet has a couple of fair sized dents along with a few smaller ones, some deformation to the visor but comes with a complete and original liner and chinstrap. A nice example of an early Italian manufactured steel helmet.
