C013856 REISSUED FRENCH WWI M15 ADRIAN AIR-FORCE HELMET.
BACKGROUND:
The French were the first to have a general issue, "modern ", steel helmet in WWI and developed the classic "Adrian" style helmet in early 1915 followed by the British army later that year and by the German’s in 1916. By September of 1915 most French front line personnel had received the helmet and by the end of the year over three million had been manufactured and distributed.DESCRIPTION: A light weight, stamped, four piece sheet metal construction, "Adrian" helmet , consisting of the crown, the front and back visors and the top comb. The helmet retains about 75% of its original black paint with light surface oxidization where the paint has chipped off. The front center of the helmet has a separate, stamped sheet metal French Aviation emblem which is a shield on which there is a pair of wings with a star at the center and the "RF" cypher, (Republique Française) above. The top of the helmet has a separate, fluted, ventilation comb running from the front center to the lip of the reverse neck guard visor and secured in place with four small dome headed split rivets. Most of the paint has been chipped of the center ridge of the comb. The underside of the neck guard and visor are painted the same as the exterior while the inside of the dome is painted in a flat green primer. The liner has felt padding along the exterior of its sweatband and six "fingers" to the crown attached by their original, adjustable, tie string. The leather exhibits light soiling, but is still quite supple. The liner is marked in two places with the number "57", what appears to be a hand written "56" , and a stamped circle, separated in half horizontally with the top half split vertically, with "GP" and "T" in the top quadrants and "2323" in the bottom half. The fluted metal alloy liner band is also intact. The helmet comes complete with its original chocolate brown leather chinstrap with an open rectangular, sliding length adjustment buckle. The chinstrap is still supple and in excellent condition. Of Note: France retained the style of the M15 through-our world war two, but improved the manufacturing process by stamping the crown and front and rear visors from one piece of manganese steel. A very nice example of a rare reissued Air-Force helmet.
