C013756 CZECHOSLOVAKIAN M29/30 COMBAT HELMET.
BACKGROUND:
The Czechoslovakian M1930 helmet was never adopted by the Czechoslovakian army, but was exported and used in large quantities during the Spanish Civil War.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A metal helmet, painted to both its exterior and the interior rim with a dark olive-drab color, whose all-around, steep visor is somewhat elongated to what must be the otherwise symmetrical helmet’s front. The interior of the helmet from the sweatband up is its original dark grey-green. Four, equidistantly-spaced flat head rivets may be seen to the exterior just above where the apron begins to flare, which secure the interior liner. To either side of the helmet, just below the liner rivets, are dome head rivets, which secure the interior bases of the swiveling "rings" for the chin strap. Also to either side, above the liner rivets and close to the crown, are ventilation lugs similar to those found on German and Austrian helmets from the First World War. To the interior is its brown-colored leather liner, which extends from behind the metal headband fixed by the exterior rivets, and is comprised of a sweatband to which is sewn, three two tongued pads that are backed by rectangular cotton cushions. Each tongue has two holes at their points for an adjustment tie string. The tie string is absent. Above and to either side of the sweatband are the rectangular "rings" around which are wrapped the ends of the blackened leather chin strap. The longer portion of the chin strap has eight buckling holes to its free end and is secured to itself through the retaining ring by a piece of wire. The other portion of the chin strap has a single-pronged, metal roller buckle, with a metal retaining loop just beyond it and is sewn to itself after passing through retaining ring. Both portions of the chin strap are starting to stiffen and crack with age. The leather pads are fairly stiff, with discolorations and a couple of small tears. Hand written to one pad is the name "M. Aliaga". Both the liner and chin strap have been replaced with what appears to be the liner and chin strap from the Spanish M21 helmet. The paint to the helmet has been about 65% retained, with numerous areas of chipping down to its original base paint layer on the exterior with some surface spotting around the interior sweatband and crown. An interesting example of a Spanish Civil war helmet.
