C013556 1914-1916 FRENCH ARMY PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM. A 12 3/4" x 10", twenty-four leaf album, to each leaf of which is glued a 6 7/8" x 5 1/8", black and white photograph. Its light blue, cardboard cover has printed to it, within a decorative border which has "Patrie" (Homeland) to its top, "Documents de la Section Photographique De L’Armée Française" (Documents of the Photographic Section Of the French Army ). "1914-1916" is printed to the lower left of the title, and "Album 1" is printed to its lower right. A sheet of protective paper comprises the first page. The first image is of an assembly at a front line village, and those following include a view of the mostly destroyed city of Reims, soldiers firing from bulwarks during the defense of Pas-de-Calais, a fort in the Meuse region, German prisoners after the battle of Champagne, shell-holes in the trenches of Champagne, French infantry passing by German earthworks in the Sabot forest, the build-up of munitions for the upcoming battle of Verdun, a bombardment during a theatrical presentation for the army at the front, and soldiers reposing around a fire within a destroyed church, with the last image being "Remise de décorations aux familles des soldats morts pour la Patrie" (Presentation of decorations to-the families of soldiers killed for the Homeland). All of the photographs are only lightly age yellowed, and the leaves that each of them are glued to exhibit only minor edge wear. The covers have more moderate edge wear, with some tearing along their spine, and are lightly soiled. To the reverse cover is the publisher’s name beneath an illustration of a sword, holster and camera resting on sprays of laurels.
