C013256 FRENCH WWI COLONIAL OFFICER'S KEPI. Black wool body, and simulated leather visor. To the center of the black crown are three strands of golden-colored cord, decoratively wrapped and sewn into a cross pattern, with similarly-colored thicker cord to the outside edge of the crown. There are four strands of the same sort of cord sewn along the upper edge of the body and three cords at each of its cardinal points where it meets the crown. The black body, which stands 3 1/2" tall, has its single seam to its rear and a golden embroidered French Marine Colonial Infantry insignia (a fouled anchor ) to its front. A golden-colored chin band, with two adjustment sliders, is affixed to a brass button to each side of the body. Embossed to each of the buttons is a French Marine Colonial Infantry insignia (a fouled anchor ). The black simulated leather visor has a blackened band stitched along its edge and its underside is in yet another blackened simulated leather to which the letters "B H" have been stamped. Light age cracking and some minor scars are to its surface. To the interior is a blackened leather sweatband with a makers mark in gold script "E Ridal, 3. Rue de Richelieu, Paris", and its black velvet liner. To the interior at the edge of the crown can be seen a stiffening wire that holds the circular shape. Nap wear and several moth nips are visible to the crown and body. The kepi has moderate to heavy staining on the crown as well as verdigris forming on the crown cords and chin band but considering its age is in great condition.
