C013156 DUTCH NSB/WA OFFICER'S VISOR CAP INSIGNIA.

BACKGROUND: The Dutch NSB, "Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging" (National Socialist Movement), was founded by Anton Mussert in December of 1931, and in December of 1941, while under the German occupation, it became the only legal political party in Holland. The NSB’s storm troopers, the WA, "Weer Afdeelingen" (Defense Sections), were originally formed in November of 1932, but were disbanded in December of 1935 when the Dutch government prohibited political militias. On May 15th, 1940, a day after the Dutch surrender, the WA was re-activated.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A wool cap badge, in the form of a black triangle, 2 1/4" along its base and 1 13/16" tall, within which is another triangle, bordered with twisted, gilt wire thread. The interior triangle is red to its right, and black to its left, and has a gilt alloy, vertical "wolfsangle" pinned over their dividing line. The use of gilt thread with the gilt alloy device establishes the insignia as being for an officer in the WA. The twin prongs for the gilt alloy device may be seen to the reverse, against a paper over muslin backing. Very light soiling and nap wear is evident throughout, and its edges are frayed from having been removed from the center band of a peaked cap.
