C012060 BRITISH FAIRBAIRN/SYKES SECOND PATTERN FIGHTING KNIFE.
BACKGROUND:
The Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife came about through the need for a good fighting knife for the newly formed commando units. W. E. Fairbairn, E. A. Sykes and Robert Wilkinson Latham of the Wilkinson Sword Company, had a meeting in November of 1940 at which W. E. Fairbairn and E. A. Sykes described the knife they wanted and preliminary sketches were drawn up and the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife was created. There were three major patterns of the knife produced.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A second pattern, nickel plated, Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife with a 6 5/8", tapering, non-fullered, double-edged, hand ground, stiletto-style blade with a high central spine. To the polished, straight double cross-guard is stamped to one side "England" and to the other side a "broad arrow," over a "5" and another partial number. The knurled, nickel plated, brass handle is clean and retains all of its plating except one small scratch near the retaining nut..The round tang nut has two marks opposite each other from where it was held in a vice on tightening and shows some wear to the plating down to brass. Other than a very slight bend to the tip and some minor surface spotting to the blade the knife is in very good condition. A very nice example of a rare second pattern fighting knife.
