C011858 BRITISH M1937 WEB MARCH COMPASS POUCH.
BACKGROUND:
In 1937, The British specified a web pattern, for use in personal equipment, made of woven waterproofed cotton, and used it though out the war. In 1942 they issued some changes such as a new frog for the mark II bayonet and increasing the height of the basic pouches to accommodate the Sten SMG magazines. Of Note: Canadian personal equipment was a direct copy of the British 1937-pattern web equipment with manufacture starting in early 1940 and distribution beginning in October of the same year. The Canadian equipment differed from its British counterpart by its yellower colored webbing and the brown paint used to cover the metal parts.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: 1937 pattern tan/khaki webbed canvas compass case whose top fold-over flap has a single brass snap closure with its visible "button" in copper. "N B Ltd" is stamped to the reverse of the snap. To the reverse, on either side, are vertical brass belt hooks with, between them, a horizontal webbed strap to the top, and a horizontal loop to the base. An indecipherable makers mark is stamped to the interior of the fold-over flap. The interior pocket is lined with a protective felt. The exterior, except for the back, has been coated with khaki colored blanco. Of Note: Blanco was a paste and later a powder that was used to whiten or color belts and other web equipment to give it a clean appearance for parade and other duties where a professional demeanor was required. To its reverse is a hand written "S". Aside from light age soiling and some wearing to the edges of the blanco, the case is in fine condition.
