PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A second pattern Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife with a 6 5/8", tapering, non-fullered, double-edged, hand ground, stiletto-style blade with a high central spine in its scabbard. The bright blade has been sharpened. To the polished, straight double cross-guard is stamped "England" over what appears to be a "broad arrow," "B," and "2." The knurled brass handle is clean although remnants of the blackening can be seen to the recesses. The round tang nut has two marks opposite each other from where it was held in a vice on tightening. The brown leather scabbard has a, square tipped, nickel plated, end cap to the bottom and raised, stitched spine to reverse. Sewn to the spine are two leather tabs that were used for stitching the sheath to clothing. Sewn to the top of the scabbard is a leather tab with slashes for leg straps and the elastic retaining strap for the knife. Other than some light surface scratching the scabbard appears to be unused and the retaining staple for the end cap was never applied. Although the blade shows moderate to heavy grinding where it has been sharpened, an area of moderate surface spotting to one side of the blade and usage scuffs and scratches to its handle it is still in good condition. A nice example of a well used second pattern fighting knife.
