C011258 FRENCH M1866 SABRE/BAYONET.
BACKGROUND:
The Model 1866 Sabre Bayonet was one of the most copied and countries including Argentina, Belgium, Egypt and the United States all manufactured or used similar Bayonets. This bayonet was designed for use with the French Model 1866 Chassepot Rifled Infantry Musket and was manufactured from 1866 to 1874 before being replaced by the French Model 1874 "Gras" Bayonet.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A Model 1866 Sabre Bayonet with its sheet steel scabbard. The bayonet has a single fuller, 22 1/2" long steel blade with a crosshilt and a solid brass handle. The blade has a re-curve or "yataghan-shape" and is marked with a "B" within a circle, a crown over "G" and there was an inscription along the spine which is only partially visible. The crossguard has a screw tightened muzzle socket to one side and a forward curved quillon to the other. The crossguard is stamped with "114.L.II.2.57." and has a crown over "T" proof and a crown over "D?". The solid brass handle has a "T" slot cut with a spring steel latching arrangement and is attached by two round headed steel rivets. The sheet rolled steel, ball finial tipped, scabbard measures 23 1/8" and has stamped near the throat "114.L.II.2." above "115.". The scabbard is in good condition with a light surface spotting and appears to be missing its hanger and throat piece. The sabre/bayonet is in good condition with some surface spotting and age darkening to the blade and crossguard with an overall age patina to the handle with some usage scratches to the surface. A nice example of an early, often copied, sabre/bayonet.
