C008756 ITALIAN INFANTRY OFFICER'S SHOULDER BOARD. A stiff shoulder board, 2 1/2" wide and 5" long, coming to a point near a buttonhole. Its obverse is faced with moderately soiled and nap worn black wool, typically worn with the black and colonial uniforms, and piped in moderately moth damaged red wool, which, if considered scarlet, would establish the wearer as having been part of the Infantry or Grenadiers, and if considered crimson, as part of the "Bersaglieri" (Rifle regiments) or Engineers. It has gold cord along its edges, indicative of a senior officer, which is decoratively knotted at its base and to either side. Sewn to the center of its obverse is a representation, embroidered in gold and silver wire, of the cap badge of an Infantry corps, being crowned, crossed rifles, against which is a black velvet medallion where the regimental number would be applied. Both the gold cord and the embroidered wire cap badge are age darkened and soiled. The reverse of the board is faced in brown-grey rayon and has a similarly faced 3/4" x 4 1/2" strap sewn to its base, with a perforation to its free end which aligns with the buttonhole to the board. The reverse is more lightly age soiled.
