C007957 SWEDISH OFFICER'S SPIKED DRESS HELMET.
BACKGROUND:
Development of the pickelhaube may be traced back to the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV who initiated the original design and introduced it for wear by most of the Prussian line Infantry regiments on October 23RD 1842. The pickelhaube became a visual symbol of Prussia’s military and after Prussia defeated France in the Franco-German War of 1870-71 they became the dominant army in Europe. Soon every one seemed to be wearing them, including Russia, England and Sweden.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A Swedish Officers spiked dress helmet that consists of a skull of stiffened black leather with a stiffened black leather neck guard and stiffened leather front visor with a folded brass edge. Mounted to the front of the helmet is a gilt and enamel plate which consists of a central blue enamel shield with three gilt crowns, two over one, surmounted by a royal crown with red felt inserts, supported by two crowned lions, the crowns with red felt inserts, while surrounding the bottom of the shield is a part of the Collar of the Order of the Seraphim, which consists of three seraphim (angels) separated by two light blue enamel patriarchal crosses joined by two rows of chain.
