C006857 ROYAL HORSE GUARD OFFICERS HELMET.
BACKGROUND:
The Blues and Royals can trace their lineage back to the Regiment of Cuirassiers, which was founded in 1650 by Oliver Cromwell. During the reign of King Charles II the regiment became the Earl of Oxford's Regiment and was nicknamed "the Oxford Blues" from the blue uniform that was used at the time. The regiment became the Royal Horse Guards Blue in 1750 and in 1877, the Royal Horse Guards (The Blues). In 1969, the Royal Horse Guards were amalgamated with the Royal Dragoons (1st Dragoons) to form the Blues and Royals. One of their ceremonial duties is that of The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, which consists of a squadron of both The Life Guards, who wear red tunics and white plumed helmets and The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons) with blue tunics and red plumed helmets.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A post 1953 Royal Horse Guard Officers Helmet that has a skull of polished nickel-silver, with a folded silvered brass edge, to the front of which is mounted a fire gilt plate that consists of a wreath of half laurel/half oak-leaf, between which is a representation of St George on horseback slaying the Dragon, that surrounds the voided Collar of the Order of the Garter which is surmounted by the Queen’s Crown (Elizabeth II). To the center of the plate is mounted an eight pointed cut-silver star with the emblem of the Order of the Garter to its center. The emblem consists of an oval buckled garter, with a blue enamel inlay, bearing the motto "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" (Shame to him who thinks ill of it) with a red enamel cross of St. George to the center. To the top of the helmet is a gilt and nickel-silver spike that rises out of an eight pointed gilt star base into which is inserted a red horsehair plume topped with a fire gilt rose pattern boss. There is a gilt rear spine that starts under the spike base and ends at the silvered brass edging at the back. To either side are gilt rose pattern ear bosses that support a wide leather backed brass chin chain. The interior of the visors are lined with green colored leather. The original eight tongue leather liner with adjustment string is intact along with an adjustable crown strap assembly, all still pliable with light usage staining. What appears to be "18" is scratched into the underside of the rear edging in two places. Other than some tarnishing to the underside of the rim and to the exterior around the rear spine and bottom part of the rear visor the helmet is in excellent condition.
