C006757 VICTORIAN LIFE GUARD TROOPERS HELMET.

BACKGROUND: The Life Guards, the senior Regiment in the British Army, can trace their formation back to 1660, with the restoration of King Charles II who had gone into exile after the Battle of Worcester in 1652. They were formed, just before the restoration, in Holland from eighty Royalists who had gone into exile with the King. One of their ceremonial duties is that of The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, which consists of a squadron of both The Life Guards, who wear red tunics and white plumed helmets and The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons) with blue tunics and red plumed helmets.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A pre-1901 Life Guard Troopers helmet that has a skull of polished nickel-silver, with a folded brass edge, to the front of which is mounted a brass plate that consists of a wreath of half laurel/half oak-leaf, between which is a representation of St George on horseback slaying the Dragon, that surrounds the Collar of the Order of the Garter which is surmounted by the Queen’s Crown (Victoria). To the center of the plate is mounted an eight pointed silvered star with the emblem of the Order of the Garter to its center. The emblem consists of an oval buckled garter bearing the motto "Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense" (Shame to him who thinks ill of it) with a cross of St. George to the center. To the top of the helmet is a nickel-silver spike that rises out of an eight pointed brass star base into which is inserted a white horsehair plume topped with a brass rose pattern boss. The square steel shaft of the plume is stamped with what appears to be "1LG", "2222" and "91". There is a brass rear spine that starts under the spike base and ends at the brass edging at the back. To either side are rose pattern ear bosses that support a wide leather backed brass chin chain. The interior front visor is lined with leather and the leather one piece liner is a replacement. The horse hair has yellowed and the interior of the skull has moderate to heavy age tarnishing but other than some minor dents the exterior of the helmet is in very good condition with a light age patina on the brass fittings.
