C006657 BRITISH PARATROOPER'S 1942 OVERSMOCK
BACKGROUND: As a result of the German paratroopers success’s early in the war the British quickly organized an Airborne battalion in early 1941. These voluntary personnel were originally kitted out with a grey/green cotton duck smock patterned after the German paratroopers smocks, until late in 1941 when the camouflage Denison smock was introduced. The smock was intended to be worn over the battle dress with any equipment to be worn on the exterior of the smock. Paratroopers were also equipped with a sleeveless jump oversmock that was worn over the equipment while jumping to minimize the equipment catching on static or jump lines. These sleeveless jump oversmocks were then discarded leaving the personnel wearing the camouflage smock while performing ground duties.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A sleeveless green denim oversmock with a small lined stand up collar and two small pleated bellows pockets with elastic top closures to the lower front on either side of a slightly oblique front zipper closure. In order to hold the smock centered, to allow for adjustment and to protect the lower part of the zipper there is sewn to the reverse bottom edge of the tail skirt an extended vertical crotch flap with four brass snaps which passes under the crotch and mates with two parallel vertical rows of three brass snaps to center of the front. Stamped to the interior of the left breast a "W broad arrow D" with an "L" above and the number ""526" below. Sewn to the right lower interior is a white cloth patch, about 1 5/8" high by 2 7/8" wide, with the black printing "Jackets, Parachutists, 1942 Pattern", "Size No. 2", "Height - - 5' 5" to 5' 6" ", "Breast - - 34" to 39" ", "J. Levy & S. Daniels (Greengate) Ltd.", and the partially obscured date which appears to be "1945". Below the date is stamped a "broad arrow". The oversmock has all its stitching intact and is in unused, unissued, excellent condition.
