C006057 ITALIAN MVSN RAILWAY MILITIA M33 HELMET.

BACKGROUND: In March 1919 Benito Mussolini established the, Fascio di Combattimento, (Union of Combatants), political party in Milan and fascism was born in Italy. Shortly afterwards the FdC adopted the black shirts that the anarchist laborers of the Romagna region of Italy had worn previously. Mussolini was first elected as a member of the Chamber of Deputies in the general election of 1921. In a fortunate set of circumstances, due to a general strike, economic chaos and a dissatisfied populace, Mussolini was able to depose Premier Luigi Facta and was appointed as Premier by King Victor Emmanuel III following the infamous "March on Rome", on October 28TH 1922. Now with Mussolini’s Partito Nazionale Fascita, (National Fascist Party), firmly in control the black shirts were to become ubiquitous through-out Italy. A decree of February 1ST 1923 reorganized the fascist militia and introduced a new designation, MVSN, Milizia Volontaria Sicurezza Nazionale, (Volunteer National Security Militia). The Railway Militia had a strength of about 30,000 men and were primarily responsible for railway security. They also provided guard detachments for stations and trains and occasionally they supplied personnel to operate the trains.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A standard issue, stamped and tooled sheet steel, production, Italian M33 helmet which retains about 95% of its smooth finished, black paint with a few small scrapes and scuffs with minor surface spotting. The front center of the helmet has a Railway Militia decal which consists of a gold winged wheel behind a gold fasces with a silver blade below which is gold laurel leaves joined in the center by a rope circle with a silver "X" inside all surmounted by a gold crown. Other than a couple of wrinkles the decal is fully retained. All three dome headed, liner retaining and ventilation rivets are intact. The interior of the helmet retains almost all its original black paint and has a light brown, eight finger, leather liner with its original tie string and all the fingers intact. The liner has numerous punched ventilation holes and the size, "56" punched into one side. The liner is in overall very good condition with light age and usage toning and minor chafe wear to edges and the leather is still quite supple. The reverse interior neck guard is stamped, "P 25" possibly indicating the manufacturer and serial number while to the front under the visor is a rectangle paper sticker with the number "103" printed on it. The helmet comes complete with its original black leather chinstrap with a magnetic pronged buckle. The chinstrap is rivetted on to rectangular swivel retainers which are rivetted to each side of the interior helmet liner band. The chinstrap is in very good condition with minor surface cracking and the leather is still quite supple. A very nice example of a rare MVSN helmet.
