C00551 FRENCH 1874 EPÉE BAYONET.
An 1874 "Epée" (sword) bayonet. The bayonet’s weathered brass, contoured bird’s head pommel has a stud guide and moderately surface spotted stud. The age-darkened, lightly scratched and pitted, contoured wooden grips are fixed with two moderately surface spotted rivets. The moderately surface spotted, contoured metal crossguard has a ball tip to its curved end and a circular muzzle guide to the other. Stamped to one side of the crossguard are three oval depressions, the first embossed with a five-pointed star above the letter "B," the second featuring the letter "M," and the third with a star above a "T." A stylized "M" followed by "34311" may also be seen to this side. Stamped to the other side is an oval depression within which is a star above a "V." Stamped to the underside of the crossguard is a star, what appears to be a "7" embossed within a square depression, and two sets of indistinguishable markings, one of which may include the letters "C" and "A." The 20 5/8" un-fullered blade tapers to a sharp point and has a wide back. Stamped to its ricasso is the same "M" within an oval depression as previously found on the crossguard, and an "S" embossed within a diamond-shaped depression. Engraved along the back of the blade is "Mre d’Armes de St Etienne Juin 1877." The blade itself is marginally less surface spotted than the other metal components.GRADE **1/2 PRICE $115.00
