C004158 POLISH II CORPS SHOULDER FLASH.

BACKGROUND: When Germany invaded the Soviet Union and Stalin became part of the Allies, he agreed to form fighting units from the among the Polish prisoners of war in Russian prison camps. Around 40 thousand Polish military personnel and their families were allowed to go to the British sector of Iran, where they underwent training and were formed into the II Polish Corp, which consisted of two divisions, the 5th Kresowa Infantry Division and the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A printed cloth badge, in the shape of a shield, about 1 13/16" by 1 9/16", of a white "Syrena" (Mermaid) with a shield and upraised sword on a red background with a white and red border. The badge has a white cloth backing with the pieces held together by a single line of machine stitching around the edge. The badge is in very good condition with minor age soiling and loose threads to the edge but appears to be unused.
