L021958 AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL DUTY GORGET. (Reichsluftaufsichtdienst Ringkragen)

BACKGROUND: Although there had been a civilian flying organization, entitled, DLV, Deutscher Luftfahrt Verband, (German Aviation Association), formed in Bremen in 1902 it wasn’t until March 1933 that the Nazi era DLV, Deutscher Luftsportverband, (German Air Sport League), was officially established by absorbing all civilian flying organizations into a single organization, by law. The DLV consisted of a civilian section commanded by Hauptmann a.D. Bruno Loerzer with Hermann Göring as honorary president and the Fliegerschaft, (Pilot Base), the clandestine core of the newly forming Luftwaffe under control of the RLM, Reichsluftfahrtministerium (National Ministry of Aviation). Prior to this in 1931 the SA, Sturm Abteilung, (Storm Troopers), had established the NSFK e. V. Nationalsozialistisches Fliegerkorps eingetragen Verband, (National Socialist Flying Corps registered Association), in an attempt to enlist personnel who were ineligible to join the Flieger-SA. (Flight-SA), The NSFK e V. was also absorbed into the DLV in March 1933. In mid-1934 the DLV established the Reichsluftaufsichtdienst, (Air Traffic Control Service), that consisted of Administrative Officials and regular soldiers. As the name implies the Air Traffic Control Service was tasked with monitoring all civilian airports within Germany. Regulations of September 1ST 1934 introduced a specific gorget to be worn by Air Traffic Control Service when performing their airfield duties. In 1937 a slightly modified, second pattern gorget was introduced although the first pattern continued to be utilized.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 2 1/4" tall, 6" wide, three piece, first pattern, (Circa 1934-1937), stamped silver alloy and brass construction, half-moon shaped, gorget with a raised lip to the outer edges. The gorget has a separate, stamped brass device consisting of stylized, horizontal extended wings emanating from a central, encircled, canted, swastika that is positioned above additional, separate, stamped brass, script, "Reichs-Luft-Aufsicht". The separate brass fittings stand out in nice relief on the silver alloy base and the swastika has a subtle gilt wash that is retained about 95%. The reverse of the gorget has a simulated, grained, green leather covering and three, brazed on brass tabs, with one to each top tip and the third tab to the center. Both of the tabs to the top tips were designed for the suspension chain and the third tab was designed to slip through a button hole on the uniform. Both of the top tip tabs are crimped in the closed position to secure the suspension chain and the button hole tab is well marked with the impressed manufacturer’s name and location, "C. E. Juncker Berlin". The gorget comes complete with its multi-link, silver alloy suspension chain. The gorget is in overall good condition with the silver alloy base showing light to moderate age tarnish and a couple of small surface spots. Scarce, short-lived gorget that would make a great addition to a display.
