L018558 KAMPFGESCHWADER 54 DOCUMENT GROUP. (Urkunde Gruppe)

Superb set of documents from Oberleutnant Anton Vogl serving with KG 54 (Totenkopf).

Transcript of the included write up.

(1)"Anton Vogl joined the Hitlerjugend at an early age, and in November of 1938 volunteered for service in the Luftwaffe. Vogl began his military service in a Flak Battalion, and in 1939 he transferred to flight service to begin his pilot training. Vogl became pilot-certified on the JU52, He111 and Ju 88, as well as night flying. On 16.7.1941 Vogl transferred to Kampfgeschwader (Bomb Group) 54, Totenkopf. He was active in South Russia, England and the Mediterranean (Sicily, Crete, North Africa, Malta) flying Ju 88. On 3.3.1943 Vogl and his crew did not return from a search-and-rescue flight, looking for the crew of a plane shot down the night before near Sicily (Lt. Berge and crew). Vogl was most likely shot down by Spitfires. Ironically, found in Vogl’s Soldbuch was a 4-leaf clover, which he had neglected to carry with him on his last fateful mission.

Vogl was awarded the Iron Cross (Eiserne Kreuz) 1st & 2nd Class, Pilot’s Badge, and Bomber Clasps (Frontflugspange Fur Kampfflieger) in Bronze & Silver."

(2) Extract from the book "Kampfgeschwader 54" by Siegfried Radtke. "In the morning 03.03. The B3 + BB (2275) crew of Oberleutnant Vogl (Staff I/54) starts to the air/sea search for the previous day’s shot down crew and does not return. Since after a message from the air traffic control in this sea-area Spitfire swarms were simultaneously in the air, and must be counted as shot down, The crew remains missing".

On 2.3.1943 the crew of Leutnant Berge were missing and it is this crew that Vogl was searching.

Crew of missing Ju88 - A4 B3 + BB (Werk Nr. 142275). Missing near Pozzalo.
