L00954 8.8cm FLAK SIGHTING OPTICS. (Flak Zielfernrohr)
BACKGROUND: The Germans were the first nation to develop anti-aircraft guns as early as the Franco-Prussian war when they utilized a 25mm caliber gun mounted on a horse drawn carriage to fire at balloons attempting to escape from the besieged city of Paris in 1870. The Germans continued to develop anti-aircraft guns and at the outbreak of WWI in 1914 they had twelve 77mm caliber anti-aircraft guns which they supplemented with captured Russian and French weapon which they retooled to 77mm. Further advancement in aviation technology resulted in the development of more effective anti-aircraft guns and the German armaments firms of Krupp and Erhardt were at the forefront of that development. By the outbreak of WWII the Germans fielded a wide variety of anti-aircraft guns ranging from the 20mm caliber light guns up to the infamous 88mm caliber guns. During the coarse of WWII the Germans continued with anti-aircraft gun development and by the end of the war they had no fewer then twelve assorted size caliber anti-aircraft guns.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Tooled steel construction Flak sight with aluminum alloy fittings. The uniquely shaped sight is roughly, 8 1/2" tall, with a roughly, 3 1/2" top diameter and a roughly, 6 1/2" by 5 1/2" tear drop shaped base plate. The sight features three separate dials for adjusting elevation, angle and traverse. All three dials still function. The sight also has a glass ocular lens and a glass objective lens but the objective lens has broken. The optics are cloudy and blurry and there appears to be no focus adjustment. The optics have a crosshair reticle pattern. The sight also has a small glass port designed to attach a light enhancement device. The sight also has a couple of small extended arms, dovetailed attachment slots and assorted attachment ports designed to affix the sight to the weapon. The sight is well marked with impressed serial number, "5400178", the designation, "Flak ZF 20E", and the manufacturers code, "bmt" indicating manufacture by C. A. Steinheil Söhne Optische Werke München. The sight retains about 70% of its original black paint with spots of wear revealing the base metal. Nice 88 Flak sight.
