L007275 RUBBERIZED RAINCOAT. (Regenmantel)

BACKGROUND: The Reichsluftwaffe was official established on February 26TH 1935 as the third branch of service of the Armed Forces. On March 9TH 1935 the formation of the new Reichsluftwaffe was announced to the foreign press and on March 16TH conscription was reintroduced for all three branches of service. On May 21ST 1935 the Reichsluftwaffe designation was altered to Luftwaffe. The standard pattern service uniform was adopted by the Luftwaffe in March 1935, and was based on the uniform worn by personnel in the Deutscher Luftsport Verband, (German Air Sports League), a civilian forerunner of the Luftwaffe, as early as 1933, with minor modifications. One of the standard issue clothing items adopted from the DLV was the greatcoat for wear by all ranks. Officer’s and Senior NCO’s were granted a clothing allowance and were responsible for purchasing their own uniform items which were generally of better quality then the issued items. Officer’s and Senior NCO’s were also permitted to purchase optional clothing items which were prohibited for enlisted ranks. The rubberized raincoat was one of the optional items available to Officer’s and Senior NCO’s and followed the basic design of the fabric greatcoats. Regulations of April 13TH 1937 introduced two slightly different models of the optional rubberized raincoats. Further regulations in 1938 discontinued the earlier raincoats and introduced two new slightly modified versions that were utilized for the duration of the war.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nice quality, 1938 pattern, full length, double breasted style, Luftwaffe blue/grey rubberized construction raincoat features a large lay down collar and small fold back lapels. The coat has two diagonally angled, slash hip pockets with straight edged fold over flaps with rounded forward edges. The reverse of the coat has an opened, overlapping, vertical tail skirt vent and a horizontal half waist belt with dual buttons to the waistline. The straight cut, non-adjustable sleeves have a horizontal row of stitching simulating French cuffs. The armpits each have three magnetic sheet metal ventilation grommets. The shoulder board fabric retaining loops and buttons are also intact. The lay down collar has no collar tabs as per regulations.
