H33854 HUNGARIAN M37(u) PISTOL HOLSTER.
(Pistolentaschen M37 (u))BACKGROUND: At the end of WWI the treaty of Trianon forced Hungary to cede large parcels of land to the allies. German conquests over, Czechoslovakia, Rumania and Yugoslavia, all saw parcels of land annexed back to Hungary, assuring their allegiance. In November 1940 Hungary signed the Tripartite Pact with Germany, and in June 1941 the Hungarian Army, (Honved), officially entered the war as an axis power. With this alliance the Hungarian armaments industry began to provide the Germans with all types of assorted weapons and equipment which were mostly distributed to second line personnel. One of weapons was the standard Hungarian M37, 7.65mm pistol. In 1887 the Hungarian government established the Fémárú Fegyver-és Gépgyár Reszvenytarsasag, (Arms and Machinery Company Limited), in Budapest to manufacture weapons for the Hungarian Army. Originally the company was unsuccessful and declared bankruptcy before reforming in the late 1890's. In 1896 the company hired Rudolf Frommer a leading weapons designer who took over management of the company in 1900. Frommer developed assorted pistols with his first large success being the 1912 "Stop", model which was officially adopted as the side arm of the newly formed Hungarian army in 1919. In 1921 Frommer developed a new 7.35mm pistol designated as the "Lilliput". In 1929 the Lilliput was reworked to a 9mm caliber and became the model, 29 which was also adopted by the Hungarian army. In 1937 a further reworking of the M29 resulted in the introduction of the 7.65mm M37 pistol which would become the standard Hungarian army issue pistol during WWII. Of Note: The Hungarian Fémárú Fegyver-és Gépgyár Reszvenytarsasag was contracted to produce several thousand M37 pistols for the Luftwaffe during WWII with the modification of a manual safety switch to the left hand side. When issued the pistols came accompanied with a holster and this example is a German manufactured model.
