K19554 KARL GALSTER MODEL SHIP PLANS. (Schiffsmodell-Bauplan)
BACKGROUND: With the reintroduction of conscription in 1935, the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht, (High Command of the Armed Forces), activated the Wehrersatzdienststelle, (Military Recruiting Offices), throughout Germany to process and administer the call up procedure. The Reich conscription laws of 1935 dictated that each of the three branches of service would be allocated a percentage of the available recruits according to their manpower requirements with the army being allotted the lions share of roughly 66% of eligible personnel followed by the Luftwaffe who were accorded roughly 25% with the Kriegsmarine receiving the remaining 9% of personnel. In order to entice recruits and foster interest in the navy the OKM, Oberkommando der Kriegsmarine, (High Command of the Navy), produced assorted items including the popular cigarette cards and ship model plans. As was common practice during the Third Reich, capital ships were quite often named after earlier German heroes and the Zerstörer, (Destroyer), Z20 "Karl Galster" was named after the commander of the WW torpedo boat S22 and was launched on June 15TH 1938 and commissioned on March 21ST 1939. The Karl Galster participated in sorties in the North sea in late 1939, mining the Thames estuary in January 1940 and assorted sorties in the North sea and the English channel through-out 1940 before service in the Arctic between 1941-1943. The Karl Galster was captured on May 8TH 1945 and handed over to the Russians as reparations in February 1946 who ended up scrapping her in the 1950's.
