K014056 EM/NCO'S "SCHULSCHIFF GNEISENAU" DONALD DUCK CAP.

BACKGROUND: German Naval uniforms and headgear were based on traditional designs that date back to the creation of the Prussian Navy in 1848. The Kaiserliche Marine Mannschaftsmütze went through only very small changes and remained virtually unaltered right up until the end of the Third Reich period. As was common practice ships were quite often named after earlier German heroes and the Training ship Gneisenau was named in honor of the Imperial Prussian Field Marshall Count August Wilhelm Anton Graf Neithardt von Gneisenau, (1760-1831), who had assisted in reorganizing the Imperial Prussian army, along with General Gerhard Johann David von Scharnhorst, (1755-1813), in the early 1800's restoring morale and resulting in the defeat of Napoleon I at Leipzig in 1813. The SMS Gneisenau was a three-masted, fully-rigged sail ship, equipped with a steam engine, that was launched September 4, 1879 and commissioned in 1880. The ship was used to train officers and after a failure of its engine during a storm, on December 16, 1900, it sank near the harbor of Málaga, Spain.

The interior of the cap also has a tan leather sweatband which has dried out and is broken and split in multiple places.
