K012356 K98 COMBAT BAYONET & FROG. (Seitengewehr 98K mit Seitengewehrtasche)
BACKGROUND: The K98 bayonet was a modification of the already modified S84/98 bayonet that had been originally developed in 1915. Manufacture of this new modified bayonet began in 1934 with mass production beginning in 1936. The K98 bayonet was a standard issue item and was accompanied by a bayonet frog to be worn on the reverse left side of the weight bearing waist belt. The K98 bayonet remained the standard issue bayonet through-out the war with minor manufacturing variations. As the war continued the quality of the bayonets deteriorated and in mid-1944 most manufacturers discontinued producing the bayonet to concentrate on producing other essential war materials.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 10" long, drop forged, steel blade with wide fullers, retains about 70% of its original, blued finish with spots of wear to the base steel with minimal surface spotting and scratching. Both sides of the ricasso are well marked with the deeply stamped serial number, "4266 a", to the obverse and the manufacturer’s code to the reverse, "S/175". Of Note: The S-codes were the first code system used on bayonets during Germany’s rearmament and were utilized to conceal the armament factories from the allies. These S-codes were generally used from 1934 to 1937, although a few bayonets manufactured as late as 1940 have been observed with this code system. The spine of the blade is also well marked with the faint, impressed date that appears to be, "36". The opened muzzle ring cross guard, the flash guard and the stylized eagle head pommel only retain remnants of their original bluing and have mostly reverted to the flat matte grey of the base steel with moderate surface spotting through-out. The bayonet has molded, dark brown, bakelite grips with seven diagonally angled grooves for better grip. The grips are secured to the tang by two, flush, screw head bolts. The "TO" slotted, stylized eagle head pommel has a single waffen-amt stamp. The rifle attachment stud button still functions. The bayonet comes with a blued, sheet metal scabbard. The scabbard retains about 30% its original bluing with spots of wear to the base steel with moderate surface spotting. The obverse of the scabbard is well marked with a stamped, serial number, "4577 n", and the reverse has the stamped manufacturer’s date and three letter code, "43 fnj", indicating manufacture by Alexander Coppel Stahlwaren und Waffenfabrik of Solingen in 1943. The bottom ball tip of the scabbard is well marked with a stamped waffen-amt. The throat retaining screw and the frog attachment lug are both intact. The bayonet comes complete with a blackened leather K98 bayonet frog. The frog consists of a roughly, 9 1/4" tall, 2 1/4" wide at its widest point and 1 1/4" wide at its narrowest point, dual layered, hour glass shaped leather panels with an opened belt loop to the top edge and a stitched on bayonet pocket to the bottom edge of the obverse. The base of the frog has a row of stitching near each outside edge with steel reinforcement rivets positioned on either side at the bottom edge of the belt loop and an additional steel rivet to each side of the reverse top edge of the bayonet pocket. The frog also an additional short row of stitching running vertically down the center of both the obverse and reverse panels. The bayonet pocket is stitched down sides with a central vertically oval front lug hole. The reverse of the frog is well marked with the stamped manufacturer’s three letter code and date, "gfg 1942", indicating manufacture by Carl Hepting & Co. Stuttgart-Feuerbach Lederwaren u. Gürtelfabrik in 1942. The reverse of the frog also has an unusual, stamped national eagle flanked by the letters "M K", positioned above additional smaller letters, "HE", that would appear to indicate Kriegsmarine issue. The frog is in overall good condition with light to moderate chafe wear and moderate to heavy surface spotting to the rivets.
