K012259 7 X 50 POWER BINOCULARS/OPTICS. (Doppelfernrohr)

BACKGROUND: The German Armed Forces used a wide variety of optical enhancement items with the 6 x 30 power, (6 power magnification with a 30mm diameter objective lens), binoculars being the standard issue optics utilized by all branches of service. Although the 6 x 30 power binoculars were the standard issue, specialized personnel such as Artillery observers, Reconnaissance personnel, Searchlight personnel, etc., required stronger optics and assorted larger power binoculars were issued to these specialized personnel on a limited basis. Although the Kriegsmarine utilized the standard 6 x 30 power binoculars they tended to use the larger power binoculars to a greater extent then the other branches of service. Generally Kriegsmarine binoculars issued to sea-going vessels did not incorporate the reticle pattern as found on the standard issue binoculars. This large, 7 x 50 power example appears to have been a stationary, vessel mounted example.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Large, tooled alloy and aluminum construction, 7 x 50, power, binoculars with molded black bakelite fittings. The lens bodies and end piece fittings retain about 55% of a pale, field-grey over-paint, with spots of wear to an underlying matte grey paint and the reddish/brown primer paint. The right side lens body shows small spots of moderate surface pitting. The binoculars have blacked painted, tooled alloy, eye sockets with molded, black, bakelite bases. The focus adjustment still functions and the optics are fairly smoky with some minor fungal spotting. The right lens has a single, central, vertical, reticle pattern. The central, lens, joining bracket with swivel width adjustment is intact and still functions. The central, lens, joining bracket retains about 20% of the field-grey over-paint, with spots of wear to an underlying black paint. The left side, forward edge of the joining bracket has a tooled alloy, push button, with internal screw threads, presumably used as a stationary attachment device. The right hand side, ocular end, body panel is well marked with the blackened, deeply impressed power designation, "7 x 50", the serial number, "173255", the manufacturer’s three letter code, "blc", indicating manufacture by Carl Zeiss Militarabteilung of Jena and an impressed "T", designation indicating the binoculars have an anti-reflective coating on the lenses which limits the amount of light reflection for clearer vision. Of Note: The anti-reflective coating was originally developed by the Carl Zeiss Militarabteilung firm of Jena in 1936. The left hand side, ocular end, body panel is also well marked a blackened, impressed national Eagle flanked over, "M", indicating Kriegsmarine issue and an unknown numeral, "346". Both of the ocular end, body panels have a raised, vertical, swivel, alloy bar and a small, rivetted on, alloy plate with three, impressed designation which consist of, "Scheinw.", (Searchlight), "Sonne", (Sun), and, "Ohne Gl.", (Without Light). The swivel bars may be positioned to the required designation which moves internal, glass, optic filters with a very dark filter when set to, "Scheinw.", a yellowish filter when set to, "Sonne", (Sun), and a clear filter when set to, "Ohne Gl.". The swivel bars each have a circular drilled port to the top edge which presumably secured an additional horizontal bar so the filter bars would both be positioned on the same setting. The right side panel of the ocular end has two, horizontally extended, opened ports with screw threaded ends, presumably to attach an internal lighting device.
