K011260 DESTRUCTION OF ENEMY SHIP PENNANT. (Wimpel für die Vernichtung von Schiffen)
BACKGROUND: The destruction of enemy ship pennant was introduced in September 1943 to recognize coastal artillery and flak-artillery batteries on auxiliary and merchant ships, under navy command, that destroyed an enemy ship. The pennants came in two patterns, with a triangular pennant awarded for destroying an enemy ship of Destroyer size or smaller and a rectangular swallow tailed pennant for destruction of enemy Cruiser or larger sized ships.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 27cm x 56cm, triangular, dual sided, printed cotton construction pennant. Pennant features a base red field with a large white circular disc near hoist edge with printed black Iron Cross superimposed over a golden yellow fouled anchor. Printing details included a narrow white and black outer border to the Iron Cross and tan border and accent detailing to the fouled anchor. White cotton bunting to hoist edge with tunnel looped suspension rope intact. Pennant in overall excellent clean condition. Of Note: The introductory regulations stipulated that the unit designation was to be applied to the bunting of the pennant to foster tradition. Lack of unit designation on bunting and condition of pennant would seem to indicate it was unissued. Rare battle honor pennant.
