K006364 COASTAL ARTILLERY OBERLEUTNANT’S GREATCOAT. (Mantel)
BACKGROUND: German Naval uniforms and headgear were based on traditional designs that date back to the creation of the Prussian Navy in 1848, and although the uniforms and headgear did evolve during the interim years, many items used during the Third Reich would still have been quite recognizable to the Imperial sailor. Beginning in 1935 Kriegsmarine land based personnel, primarily Coastal Artillery units, were issued field-grey uniforms, including greatcoats, that followed the fundamental designs of the army uniforms with minor variations. The Greatcoat was an essential uniform item worn by all ranks, with minor variations, and followed the basic design of the Imperial German army’s greatcoat. During WWII the German army utilized at least thirteen different styles of greatcoats with numerous variations and intended purposes. Of Note: Officers and certain senior NCO ranks were responsible for purchasing their own uniforms and headgear and as a result were allotted a clothing allowance through the OKK, Offizier Kleiderkasse der Kriegsmarine, (Officer’s Clothing Account of the Navy). Of Note: Although regulations dictated that the privately purchased leather greatcoats were to conform to the style and cut of the standard issue greatcoats numerous subtle and not so subtle variations were utilized.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Nice quality, private purchase, blue/grey, multi-panel, leather construction, double breasted style, full length, greatcoat with fold back lapels and a lay down collar. The coat features dual, vertical, parallel, rows of six, front closure buttons with corresponding button eyelets on the left front panel. All the buttons are the gilted alloy type with an embossed fouled anchor on a horizontally ribbed field with a simulated twisted rope outer border. Ten of the original twelve buttons remain. Buttons are all KM marked and dated for 1939. Original Oberleutnants sew on straps are present with a partial Coastal Artillery cypher remaining on one, while the other is missing. The coat also has a single metal hook and eye positioned at the forward neckline for a secure closure. The coat has two, diagonally angled, slash, front hip pockets with slightly angular fold over flaps positioned at the waistline. The straight cut, non-adjustable, sleeves have simulated French cuffs with a horizontal row of stitching near the top edges. The coat has an open tail skirt vent which runs from the waist belt down to the bottom edge of the coat. The interior of the greatcoat including the sleeves is fully lined in mid-brown rayon. The lining has leather reinforced, horizontal slash pocket to the left breast panel and a small, leather reinforced, diagonal slash to the reverse of the left front exterior pocket to suspend the dagger/sword (sewn closed). The lining also has a horizontally extended, leather strap with evenly spaced, male snaps and a dual female snap positioned at the left waistline. Roughly a 36" chest. Shows the expected period use and wear. Nice salty, worn example. Rare example to find, I have never seen another offered for sale. Would make a superb Coastal Artillery officer’s mannequin.
