K003360 ENGINEERING OBERLEUTNANT ZUR SEE FROCK COAT. (Frock Mantel)

BACKGROUND: German Naval uniforms and headgear were based on traditional designs that date back to the creation of the Prussian Navy in 1848, and although uniforms and headgear did evolve during the interim years many items used during the Third Reich would still have been quite recognizable to the Imperial sailor. The Frock coat was carried over from the Imperial German Navy on into the Weimar Reichsmarine era, (National Navy, Circa 1919-1933), and on into the Third Reich. The Frock coat was worn by all Officers with the formal and informal dress uniforms, with certain forms of the service dress uniform and the walking-out dress uniform. Regulations of September 6TH 1939 discontinued wear and production of the Frock coat to be reinstated at the successful conclusion of the war. Officers and certain senior NCO ranks were responsible for purchasing their own uniforms and headgear and as a result were allotted a clothing allowance through the OKK, Offizier Kleiderkasse der Kriegsmarine, (Officer’s Clothing Account of the Navy). Generally speaking officers bought nice quality, private purchase, uniform items but they could also choose to buy their uniforms directly from the military clothing depots.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Very nice quality, private purchase, deep navy blue doeskin wool construction, full length, double breasted style, frock coat features fold back, upswept, peak lapels and a small lay down collar. The frock coat features dual, vertical, parallel, rows of five, front closure buttons with three corresponding button eyelets on the right front panel and four on the left front panel, enabling the coat to be button either left or right handedly. The top button on each side are ornamental and not functional and the fold back peak lapels also have a single, ornamental button eyelet to each. The right breast has a hand embroidered national breast eagle in gilt wire threads with golden yellow cotton accent threads, mounted on a cut-out, navy blue, wool base. The eagle is neatly handstitched to the jacket. The eagle shows heavy age tarnish and has taken on a matte grey appearance which makes the golden yellow accent threads stand out in strong contrast. The frock coat has no exterior pockets. The sleeves have straight cut, non-adjustable cuffs and each sleeve has two, parallel, horizontally ribbed, woven gilt wire, horizontal rank tress strips. The tress strips features two raised horizontal bars and a recessed waffle pattern. The tress strips are machine stitched in position and show light age and usage tarnish. The sleeves also have a small, hand embroidered, career insignia consisting of a multi-cogged gear wheel with six internal spokes in gilt wire threads mounted on a small, cut-out, circular, navy blue wool base, positioned just above the sleeve rank tress strips. The career insignia shows moderate to heavy age and usage tarnish and verdigris spotting. The tress signifies the rank of Oberleutnant zur See and the career insignia indicates an Engineering Officer. The reverse of the frock coat has a central, opened, vertical, tail skirt vent running from the waistline to the bottom edge of the tail skirt. Each side of the tail skirt vent have small, ornamental, vertical scalloped panels with three, vertically aligned, ornamental buttons to each. The frock coat has sewn on shoulder boards in matte silver/aluminum Russian braid, with a single, gilt washed, stamped alloy, rank pip and the gilt washed, stamped alloy, multi-cogged gear wheel with six internal spokes career cypher, to each mounted, on deep navy blue wool bases. The shoulder board retaining buttons are intact. The frock coat also has additional, ribbed, gilt wire and navy blue wool, bridal loops positioned beneath each shoulder board, designed for securing the large dress epaulettes as required. The frock coat has no collar tabs as per regulations. The interior of the frock coat is fully lined in ribbed, black rayon with black and grey striped, off-white sleeves. The lining has a horizontal, slash pocket to the left breast and an integral, two piece, horizontal, ribbed black rayon belt, positioned at the waistline, with five button eyelets on the left side and five corresponding, rayon covered, magnetic sheet metal buttons on the right side. The lining has a black rayon tailor’s label machine stitched to the nape of the neck, with the faint, golden yellow machine woven, tailor’s name and location that appears to be, "Niemann & Lappe Kiel". The interior of the left breast pocket has a white oilcloth label machine stitched in place with black printed and handwritten script that includes the tailor’s name and location, "Niemann & Lappe Kiel" and the handwritten owner’s rank, name and date that appears to be, "Leutnant Ingr. Schall 22. 2. 1927". The frock coat is in overall very good condition with minimal nap wear to the cuff and collar edges and minor age and usage toning. All the exterior buttons are a combination of the fire gilted, stamped magnetic sheet metal and alloy types and all feature an embossed, fouled, anchor on a horizontally ribbed field with a simulated, twisted, rope outer border. The buttons are all still clean and bright and appear to have their original stitching. The jacket is roughly a size 36" chest.
