BACKGROUND: Following an age old military tradition the German armed forces of the Third Reich utilized a wide variety of identifying flags and pennants to distinguish Officers, Headquarters and specific vessels. The Water Sports Vessel flag was introduced on April 6^TH 1936 and was mandatory to be flown from all vessels of the Navy Regatta Association, (Marine-Regattaverein), and all Kriegsmarine owned yachts and sailing vessels. The Water Sports Vessel flag was utilized for the duration of the war.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 24" tall, 45 3/4" long, dual sided, printed, cotton construction Water Sports Vessel flag features a red base field with a central, white circular disk with a black, canted swastika superimposed on a white bordered, black, vertical anchor. Both sides of the flag have the same image. The fly edge of the flag has a dual-ply hem and three diagonal rows of reinforcement stitching to each corner. The hoist edge of the flag has a dual-ply, white cotton, bunting with a small, tunnel looped, suspension rope with a closed loop to the top edge. The flag has no visible markings. The flag shows areas of light to moderate age and usage toning and has about two dozen small rips and tears.
