BACKGROUND: The Kriegsmarine utilized a wide variety of footwear to include the tall marching boots, riding boots, lace up ankle boots, foul weather rubber boots and a variety of lace up leather and canvas shoes. Private purchase lace up shoes were also permitted for wear as long as they were unadorned and conformed to regulation patterns. Dress regulations generally stipulated what type of footwear was to be worn according to the uniform worn or the functions to be performed. The standard footwear for EM’s and junior NCO’s rank while serving on ships or land based garrisons were the issue, low-cut canvas, "Plimsole" type shoes with leather trim.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: EM’s, junior NCO’s low-cut, olive drab, canvas construction shoes with blackened leather trim. The shoes consist of a two piece, canvas and leather heel section panel and a one piece, canvas forward foot panel. The shoes each have a one piece, scalloped, overlapping, leather reinforcement panel the inner section and a vertical, leather seam to the reverse center. The forward, toe sections of the foot panel also have a one piece, scalloped, overlapping, leather reinforcement panel. The central, diagonally angled top opening has a black leather reinforcement panel to each side with six, magnetic sheet metal lace up grommets and an internal, leather tongue. The laces are absent. The shoes each have low, stacked leather heels, insteps and forward soles. The insteps are well marked with a stamped, Eagle over "M", indicating Kriegsmarine issue. The interior of both shoes are well marked with black inkstamped numerals that may indicate the size and/or date. The shoes don’t appear to have been worn but show areas of light to moderate age toning and a small splotch of white paint and the magnetic sheet metal lace up grommets show light to moderate surface spotting. The shoes are roughly size 7. Scarce Kriegsmarine deck shoes.
