K000256 CARPENTER'S CROSS-CUT SAW. (Sage)
BACKGROUND: Although woodwork is generally not associated with the mostly metal constructed naval vessels of the WWII era many of the vessels still had a substantial amount of woodwork to the interiors. On entering Kriegsmarine service all personnel were assigned and trained for a specific career. These careers consisted of a wide variety of specialty trades and functions and included carpentry. Besides sea-going personnel the Kriegsmarine also had large land based units, primarily Coastal Artillery personnel, who would also have required carpentry skills. As a result the carpenters would have required the appropriate tools including assorted saws. Generally these tools would be kept in a units storage depot and issued as required.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 27 1/2" long cross cut saw with a roughly, 23 3/4" long, drop forged steel blade with one hundred twenty-two extended, sharpened cross-cut teeth and a carved hardwood handle. The blade is roughly, 6" tall at the handle end tapering down to roughly, 2 1/2" tall at the cutting end. The blade shows light to moderate surface spotting through-out and has a faint, mostly illegible, stenciled manufacturers name with the location being visible as, "Remscheid". The uniquely shaped hardwood handle is secured to the blade by three evenly spaced rivets. The handle has a central, vertically oval, cut-out hand grip with a contoured outer edge. The handle is well marked with a deeply stamped Eagle over "M" indicating Kriegsmarine issue. The handle has a small crack to one side but is still secured tightly to the blade. Interesting Kriegsmarine issue carpentry tool.
