J09050 (IJA) TYPE 94 (1934) 8 MM PISTOL.
A favorite among tank crews and paratroopers, this last semi-automatic pistol designed for use by the Japanese army during the second world war was readily distinguishable from the earlier "Nambu" pistols by its unique configuration, particularly the slide covering of the barrel. Recoil-operated and fed with a six-round magazine, its ammunition, however, was the same as that of the "Nambu" and "Model 14" (1925) pistols. With an overall length of 7 3/8", and a height of 4 5/8", the pistol is blued throughout and features checkered black bakelite grip panels. The sights consist of a forward blade and a rear notch. The cocking piece to the rear of the breech bolt has seven vertical grooves to either side of it. A long, external sear bar is to the left side of the frame, beneath the rear of which is a pivoting safety lever. Forward of this lever is the kanji symbol for "fire," above it, the symbol for "safe." The other stamped markings to the left side of the frame include, from right to left, the kanji symbols for "9," "4" and "Model." The stamped markings to the right side of the frame include a five-digit serial number, with a small kanji control stamp before it, the maker’s symbols of both the Nambu Rifle Manufacturing Company and the Nagoya Army Arsenal, and the kanji symbol for the Showa era followed by "16.2;" which indicates that the weapon was made during the second month of the sixteenth year of Showa, or February of 1941. A swiveling lanyard hook is to the rear of the frame. What appears to be a small kanji control stamp may be seen to the left side of the trigger. Beneath the trigger is a small magazine release latch, with a latch nut alongside of it to the forward section of the left grip. Replacing the magazine is a block of black-painted wood with a screw to its forward edge. Very light surface spotting is evident over most of its blued surface, with equally light wear to its edges and highlights, the grip plates are moderately scarred, and the pistol has been deactivated by completely filling its barrel, soldering fast its bolt lock, and removing its firing pin.GRADE ***1/4 PRICE $460.00
