J04653 (IJN) OFFICER'S VISOR CAP. An Imperial Japanese Navy officer’s visor cap, first introduced in 1905 and used until the end of the Second World War. The cap’s one-piece dark blue wool crown retains the internal stiffening wire along its edge. The four-piece body, in the same color and material, has seams at each of its cardinal points, with two metal grommet ventilation holes under each side of the crown. Typical light nap wear is evident to the crown and body, but there appear to be no moth nips. The tightly-woven black center band has its seam to the front, over which, and over the forward seam to the body, is a gilt embroidered wreath surrounding a gilt fabric-ringed "button," upon whose convex, dark blue background is fixed a gilt alloy fouled anchor. A five-lobed, gilt alloy cherry blossom is fixed over the wreath and "button." Its alloy components have worn to their highlights, and the gilt wire embroidery has dulled with age. The consigner reports that the insignia is held in place by thread loops that were post-war applied, but that all of the components are otherwise original. The cap has its original pressed paper chinstrap, finished in black, with dual adjustment sliders, fixed over each ear by gilt-washed alloy buttons with embossed anchors and cherry blossoms to them. The buttons have also dulled and have wear to their highlights. The black lacquered visor exhibits typical age checking, but still retains all of its reinforced edging material and stitching. The blackened oilcloth sweatband to the interior is moderately worn, with several small holes and a tear to it, but is otherwise intact, and its purple silk lining exhibits only light soiling. Sewn to the interior crown is a moderately soiled white fabric diamond, with a red ink stamp in the form of a cartouche with indistinguishable kanji characters within it, alongside of which are two handwritten kanji characters, which must be the original owner’s name.
