J02255 Mitsubishi Ki-51 "Sonia" Ground Attack Flight Stick. The Mitsubishi Ki-51 ground attack aircraft was deveopled in 1939 as a replacement for the Ki-30. The aircraft served with great success with the IJA until the end of the war in 1945. Aluminum construction joystick, painted black and with tan-colored cord wrapped around its hand-holds, approximately 12 5/8" in overall height, mounted on a 4 15/16" square, stepped wooden display base. The top of the joystick is in the form of a short, horizontal cylinder, with a "target"-like marking painted in red to its uppermost surface, from either side of which extend the arching, wrapped hand-holds, which then become part of its roughly "Y"-shaped base. To the top of its base, between the hand-holds, is mounted a spring-loaded device with a push thumb tab, which is most likely a trigger. Beneath this device, to the forward face of the base itself, is a red and black painted plate with kanji characters to each of its cardinal points, to the center of which is a circular device with a broken extension to it. It would appear that the plate had been removed and re-attached upside down, as the characters are inverted (viewed properly, the character to the right translates as "right," and that to the left as "left"). The reverse of the base extends to form the anchor for the spring-loaded trigger, beneath which are impressed arsenal stamps with a "504" number. Mitsubishi factory logo can still be seen. Super nice piece, very seldom come up for sale.
