J014758 (IJA) SOLDIER'S PERSONAL NATIONAL FLAG WITH KANJI.
BACKGROUND:
Most Japanese troops during the second world war carried a personal flag. They had practical as well as patriotic uses, such as marking positions to keep them safe from friendly aircraft while advancing. Typically produced from silk, they where also produced is other materials such as cotton.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: One piece fine linen example is 32" x 29". Both original tie-strings are present as are the pig skin leather re-enforced corners. An approximately 16" diameter red "Himaru" is printed to the center of the flag's white field. Handwritten, in black, around the Himaru are numerous kanji characters with various slogans. Flag was presented to Tiyoma Sigemi. There are additional signatures of military personnel on this flag. There are also 3 seals (hanko) present including a 2" square shrine seal and a double Kikusui-No mon hanko. Nice flag, clean.
